Norris, who seized the championship lead from his teammate by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout set to begin at 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the championship fight, trailing 36 points behind Norris, was classified in P17 as his Red Bull team followed a alternative strategy. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he rotated at Turn Four early in the session.
